Grateful for the Gift of Vision

Shirley Mouer

Shirley Mouer and her daughterIn October 2009, I was diagnosed with cataracts in both my eyes. The condition came on quite suddenly and progressed rapidly. My vision was so poor that I gave up driving at night and in low-light conditions. For an active and involved mom of a 6-year-old, my quality of life was severely impacted. I knew a little bit about cataracts, because my father and nearly all of my grandparents had undergone successful surgeries for cataracts, but I had never imagined that I would be dealing with the problem at age 40.

Initially, I was afraid and extremely apprehensive about having surgery done on my eyes, but I'm so grateful to have received surgical care from Dr. Michael Lee. Dr. Lee is an amazing physician. He is a talented and confident surgeon with a calm, caring, and understanding demeanor. I truly felt that he would do everything he could to ensure that my surgeries had a positive outcome.

I'm happy to report that I had the first lens replacement surgery done at Group Health in Bellevue in December 2009, and the second in January 2010. Both were successful, and I experienced very little pain at all. With new lenses in my eyes, I can actually see better than I have in decades. Now I only need glasses with a very low prescription for driving or distance vision. I'm so thankful to have my sight back and to be able to resume my daily activities.

Prior to this experience I took my eyesight for granted. Now, I am blessed with the realization of what a precious gift it is to see my daughter's lovely smile every day.

Thank you, Dr. Lee and Group Health.
